Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Turkey
Dear friends and industry colleagues,
In July 2017 we will meet once again for the largest gathering of senior oil and gas representatives from all over the world at the 22nd World Petroleum Congress in Istanbul.
Our Turkish hosts and the WPC Congress Programme Committee (CPC) have prepared another world class Congress for you. The theme ‘Bridges to our Energy Future’ is a perfect fit for the current challenges we are seeing in the petroleum industry. Building bridges between the oil and gas industry, its customers and stakeholders, across nations and oceans, between the different aspects of our sector and to other industries, will make our industry more efficient and more environmentally sound, and will help to improve the image both for the upstream and downstream sectors.
As part of the expected 5000 delegates we look forward to welcoming over 600 speakers to the Congress, including ministers and CEOs of NOCs and IOCs, the heads of international organisations and top-level experts from around the globe. In nearly 100 sessions they will share their knowledge and expectations for the future of the oil and gas industry with you. The Plenaries, CEO Panels, Strategic Sessions, Forums and more will address a wide spectrum of issues across the sector, such as upstream challenges in a low oil price environment, the increasing importance of petrochemicals in downstream, the rise of natural gas, climate change strategies, engaging and retaining talent in our industry and how to manage all these issues through better governance.
The Congress will be accompanied by one of the largest strategic oil and gas exhibitions, the World Petroleum Exhibition, featuring our 70 member countries in the Global Business Opportunities Centre (GBOC), as well as special stands showcasing the industry’s involvement in social responsibility and young leaders to the 20,000 visitors we anticipate. This is where you will also find the Poster Plaza with up to 200 presentations from 20 different technical Forums on E&P, petrochemicals and refining, natural gas and the sustainable management of the industry.
With beautiful Istanbul as the background, the social events, including the Opening Ceremony and Turkish Night will be another highlight at the “Olympics of the Oil and Gas Industry”. We are grateful to hold the Congress under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey and re-assured by their dedication to hosting a safe and secure event for all.
We look forward to welcoming you to Istanbul and I hope you will join us with your team for the 22nd World Petroleum Congress in July 2017.
Dr. József TOTHPresident, World Petroleum Council
As the Turkish National Committee (TNC) of the World Petroleum Council (WPC), we are honored to be selected to host the 22nd World Petroleum Congress in 2017.
I am proud to tell you that, the 22nd WPC will be held under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey and Turkish Petroleum, the National Oil & Gas Company of Turkey, is the host country sponsor of the event.
With the theme “Bridges to our energy future”, the 22nd WPC Congress Program Committee is working on an extensive program to cover all opportunities and challenges regarding the oil and gas industry, from energy geopolitics to finance, technical innovation to collaboration, new business models to energy access, as well as many other major issues to consider. With 70 member countries, the World Petroleum Congresses attract more than 100 countries and 1500 companies. We are expecting more than 50 ministers, 500 policy makers, 500 CEO’s and 5000 delegates as well as 20.000 exhibition visitors.
Turkey’s close proximity to more than 75% of the global oil and gas reserves makes it a natural bridge between world’s 2nd largest gas market, continental Europe and world’s largest oil and gas resources, namely the Middle East and Caspian Region. Besides being a huge market with a rapidly growing economy, Turkey is a young and dynamic country where demand for energy increases consistently. Furthermore, Turkey still stays as a large frontier in terms of hydrocarbon exploration. Lately, the recent discoveries in the nearby geography have revived the interests of major companies in the Turkey section of Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean. The shale gas potential in Turkey is also substantial and unconventional exploratory drillings in two basins in Turkey already started. All these dynamics make Turkey an important player in the global petroleum industry.
İstanbul, which is uniquely spanning the two continents of Europe and Asia, acting as a physical and metaphorical bridge between East and West, is a city that calmly reconciles the traditional with the modern. In light of the previous high level events, high quality hotels (more than 30.000 rooms), excellent congress facilities and services , I would like to assure you that, Istanbul, with the historical heritage will provide an unforgettable event for all congress participants.
İstanbul is a global city that has the spirit, history, culture and technology. Along with the strong support from the government, institutions, corporates, academia and private companies, we are sure that Istanbul, with her mystical and modern atmosphere, is going to fulfill the expectations in a very high level and enchant all the congress participants.
We are ready to welcome you to Istanbul for this very distinguished event, 22nd WPC on 9-13 July, 2017.
